Season Structure (15s & 7s Pathway)

Most Division I women’s rugby programs in the U.S. compete in both 15s and 7s, typically splitting the year with a 15s season (fall) and a 7s season (spring). While 15s is generally considered the primary collegiate format, 7s has become essential for development and spring competition.

Across collegiate rugby systems for 2025–2026, formats vary by governing body:

  • NCR (National Collegiate Rugby): Runs a fall 15s season followed by a 7s championship in the spring (April).
  • NIRA (Varsity programs): Focus on fall 15s, with many teams competing in spring 7s tournaments via CRAA or NCR.
  • CRAA (College Rugby Association of America): Supports both 15s and 7s championship structures, especially in spring competition formats.

While some varsity programs limit 7s participation due to scheduling and regulations, most Division I teams participate in both formats across the academic year.
