While the rest of the rugby sevens world prepares for a qualification race stretching into 2028, the United States already knows it will be there when Olympic rugby comes to Southern California.
USA’s men’s and women’s teams are guaranteed places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after World Rugby confirmed the qualification pathway for rugby sevens at LA28.
As host nation, the United States receives an automatic quota place in both competitions. Neither U.S. team will need to qualify through the HSBC SVNS World Championship, a regional qualifier or the final Olympic Repechage.
For everyone else, the road to Los Angeles begins with the 2026/27 HSBC SVNS season.
A total of 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams will compete at LA28, with each qualified National Olympic Committee able to select a 12-player delegation per team.
USA Has Already Secured Its LA28 Places
For the United States, the biggest news in World Rugby’s announcement is simple: both Olympic places are secure.
The USA women will return to the Olympic stage four years after producing the biggest Olympic result in program history.
At Paris 2024, the Americans defeated Australia in dramatic fashion to win bronze, securing the United States’ first Olympic medal in rugby sevens.
Now they know they will have an opportunity to compete for another medal on home soil.
The USA men are also guaranteed a return to the Olympics as hosts.
With qualification settled, both U.S. programs can plan their LA28 cycles knowing they will be part of the 12-team fields in Southern California.
For everyone else, the competition for the remaining places is about to begin.
How Rugby Sevens Teams Qualify for LA28
Each men’s and women’s tournament will feature 12 teams.
The pathway breaks down into four parts.
1 — Host Nation
1 place
The United States automatically qualifies in both competitions as the LA28 host nation.
2 — HSBC SVNS World Championship 2027
4 places
The four highest-ranked eligible men’s teams and four highest-ranked eligible women’s teams in the final HSBC SVNS World Championship 2027 standings will secure Olympic quota places for their National Olympic Committees.
The United States is excluded from those four places because it is already qualified as host.
That puts Olympic qualification directly into the 2027 SVNS title race. Teams competing near the top of the standings will not simply be chasing a world championship — they will also have an opportunity to secure their Olympic places more than a year before LA28.
3 — Regional Qualification
6 places
After the conclusion of HSBC SVNS 2027, attention turns to regional qualification during the second half of 2027.
World Rugby’s six regional associations each have a pathway:
- Africa
- Asia
- Europe
- North America
- Oceania
- South America
Under the standard pathway, one men’s and one women’s LA28 place is available through each region.
North America, however, comes with an important exception because the United States has already qualified as host.
4 — Olympic Repechage
1 place
The final Olympic quota place in each competition will be decided at the Olympic Repechage in June 2028.
Eight men’s and eight women’s teams will reach the repechage through regional championships or Games.
From there, there is no margin for error.
The men’s winner takes the final men’s place at LA28. The women’s winner takes the final women’s place.
That completes the 12-team Olympic fields.

Why North America’s Path Is Different
This is the wrinkle in World Rugby’s qualification system that is easiest to miss.
The United States is part of North America but does not need the region’s qualification place because both U.S. teams are already in LA28 as hosts.
World Rugby has therefore created a special provision.
If another eligible North American men’s or women’s team qualifies directly for LA28 through the HSBC SVNS World Championship 2027 standings, the North American regional qualifier will instead qualify a team for the Olympic Repechage.
The corresponding LA28 quota place will then be awarded to the next highest-ranked eligible National Olympic Committee at the final Olympic Repechage.
In other words, North America’s pathway can change depending on what happens during the 2027 SVNS World Championship.
That makes the SVNS standings particularly important for the region well before its own qualifier is played.
Olympic Qualification Starts With SVNS 2027
The first Olympic places available through competition will be decided through the 2026/27 HSBC SVNS season.
The campaign begins in Dubai on November 28–29, 2026, followed by Cape Town on December 5–6.
The series then moves into 2027 with stops in Singapore, Perth, Vancouver and New York.
The HSBC SVNS World Championship follows with three events:
Hong Kong — April 9–11, 2027
Valladolid — May 21–23, 2027
Bordeaux — May 28–30, 2027
Bordeaux is where the first major piece of the LA28 field will fall into place.
The final World Championship standings will determine the four eligible men’s and four eligible women’s teams that qualify through the SVNS pathway.
Those teams will be able to secure their Olympic places more than a year before the Games.

LA28From Paris Bronze to a Home Olympics
For the USA women, the road from Paris to Los Angeles carries added significance.
The Americans arrived at Paris 2024 without an Olympic rugby medal.
They left with bronze.
After reaching the medal match, the USA faced Australia and produced one of the defining moments in American sevens history, scoring at the death to win 14–12 and claim bronze.
New Zealand won the women’s Olympic title, defeating Canada in the gold medal match.
In the men’s tournament, host nation France defeated two-time defending champion Fiji for gold, while South Africa claimed bronze.
Four years later, the United States gets the home-field opportunity.
And unlike most of the teams hoping to join them, the Americans already know they will be there.
What LA28 Means for USA Rugby
Qualification is no longer part of the equation for the USA.
Preparation is.
Both American programs have almost two years to build toward an Olympics in their own country without the risk of missing the tournament through the qualification process.
LA28 will feature 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams, with each competition beginning with three pools of four before moving into the knockout stages.
Rugby sevens is scheduled to be played at Carson Stadium in Carson, California.
Under the current LA28 competition schedule, the women’s tournament begins July 12, 2028, two days before the Olympic Opening Ceremony. The women’s medals are scheduled to be decided July 15.
The men’s competition begins July 16, with the medal matches scheduled for July 18.
The competition schedule remains subject to change before the Games.
For much of the rugby world, the next two years will be about earning a ticket to Los Angeles.
For the USA, the ticket is already secured.
The question now is whether playing an Olympic Games on home soil can help turn that guaranteed place into something more.
