The first two weekends of the 2026 NIRA women’s rugby season produced close finishes, record scores and several early statements. Week 3 should begin showing which results represent lasting progress and which teams still have work to do.
Five NIRA fixtures are currently listed by participating schools for Saturday, September 19. The schedule is led by an intriguing Division II meeting between Davenport and Frostburg State. In Division I, Sacred Heart visits Army, Navy travels to American International College and Mount St. Mary’s hosts La Salle. Princeton also welcomes Division II West Chester for a cross-division matchup.
Several non-conference games involving NIRA programs are scheduled across the weekend. Kickoff information and schedule changes will be tracked on RFC’s 2026 NIRA schedule.
By the Numbers
Game of the Week: Davenport vs. Frostburg State
Saturday, September 19 — 10:00 a.m. ET
DU Turf Field, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Davenport and Frostburg State enter Week 3 after recording two of the strongest Division II results of the young season.
Frostburg State opened with a 75–0 victory over Emory & Henry. Davenport then traveled to West Chester and returned home with a 44–0 win, scoring 22 points in each half while keeping the Golden Rams off the scoreboard.
Davenport captain Leilani Lepe scored twice against West Chester, while the Panthers’ defense delivered a complete shutout. Frostburg has yet to face an opponent coming off a performance as convincing as Davenport’s.
This game should provide the clearest early indication of the Division II hierarchy. It is also the weekend’s only matchup between teams that have already recorded dominant NIRA victories.
What to watch: Which team can maintain its defensive structure when the opposition begins producing sustained pressure?
RFC outlook: This is the most difficult game of the weekend to project—and the one most likely to affect the next RFC NIRA rankings update.
Sacred Heart at Army
Saturday, September 19 — kickoff time to be confirmed
Anderson Rugby Complex, West Point, New York
Sacred Heart came within two points of defeating defending national champion Harvard during opening weekend. The Pioneers pushed the Crimson throughout an eventual 26–24 loss and demonstrated that they can compete with one of the strongest programs in NIRA.
Army’s start has been more difficult. The Black Knights lost their NIRA opener 41–8 at Dartmouth before falling 27–7 to La Salle in an exhibition match at West Point.
The La Salle result does not count toward the NIRA standings, but Army was held scoreless after taking a 7–0 halftime lead. La Salle scored all 27 of its points during the second half.
That makes Saturday’s second-half performance particularly important. Army must turn promising periods into a complete 80-minute effort. Sacred Heart, meanwhile, has an opportunity to convert the encouragement of its Harvard performance into its first victory of the season.
What to watch: Can Army produce enough possession and territory to prevent Sacred Heart from controlling the second half?
RFC outlook: Sacred Heart enters with the stronger early result, but Army’s home advantage makes this a meaningful test for both programs.
Princeton vs. West Chester
Saturday, September 19 — noon ET
Rickerson Field at Haaga House, Princeton, New Jersey
No NIRA team has scored more points through its first two listed NIRA fixtures than Princeton.
The Tigers opened with a 52–17 victory at La Salle and followed it with a program-record 91–0 win over LIU. Princeton has scored 143 points while allowing only 17, producing a point differential of plus-126.
West Chester faces a difficult response after losing 44–0 to Davenport. The Golden Rams held the Panthers scoreless for the opening 12 minutes but conceded four tries before halftime and another 22 points after the break.
The immediate challenge for West Chester is slowing Princeton before the match opens up. The Tigers have already shown that they can turn defensive errors into points quickly and repeatedly.
For Princeton, this cross-division matchup is another opportunity to demonstrate that its early scoring totals represent a broader step forward rather than simply favorable matchups.
What to watch: How long can West Chester prevent Princeton from establishing its preferred pace and field position?
RFC outlook: Princeton enters with the stronger early-season results, but its performance should be judged by its execution as much as the final margin.
American International College vs. Navy
Saturday, September 19 — 11:00 a.m. ET
Ronald J. Abdow Field, Springfield, Massachusetts
AIC’s Division I home opener against Navy is one of the weekend’s most difficult games to measure.
Navy lost 33–17 at Brown in its opening match. The Midshipmen were competitive enough to remain within reach, but they now need a response before a difficult September 25 meeting with Lindenwood.
AIC has yet to play this fall after its scheduled opening game against Queens was postponed. That leaves no current-season match data for assessing the Yellow Jackets before Saturday’s contest.
The matchup should nevertheless tell us something important about both teams. Navy needs to show that it can respond after the Brown defeat, while AIC gets its first opportunity to establish where it belongs in the developing Division I picture.
What to watch: Whether Navy can impose its physical game early instead of being forced to chase the match.
RFC outlook: AIC’s postponed opener makes this the weekend’s biggest unknown.
Mount St. Mary’s vs. La Salle
Saturday, September 19 — kickoff time to be confirmed
Echo Field, Emmitsburg, Maryland
Mount St. Mary’s and La Salle both enter this game with reasons for encouragement despite losing their NIRA openers.
The Mountaineers were one point away from victory against LIU, falling 29–28 in one of the closest results of opening weekend.
La Salle lost 52–17 to Princeton but responded by defeating Army 27–7 in an exhibition at West Point. The Explorers trailed 7–0 at halftime before scoring 27 unanswered points.
Because the Army match was an exhibition, it does not alter La Salle’s NIRA record. It does, however, provide evidence that the Explorers can adjust during a match and finish strongly.
This may be the most evenly matched contest among the five NIRA fixtures currently listed for Saturday.
What to watch: Mount St. Mary’s ability to close out a tight game against a La Salle side that produced an impressive second-half response at Army.
RFC outlook: The early results point toward a competitive match that could remain undecided deep into the second half.
Lindenwood Continues Its Road Schedule
Lindenwood at Southern Nazarene
Saturday, September 19 — 11:00 a.m. ET
Bethany, Oklahoma
Lindenwood returns to Southern Nazarene for a second non-conference meeting after winning 51–0 in St. Charles on September 6.
The Lions followed that result with a 103–5 NIRA victory over Queens. Through two matches, Lindenwood has scored 154 points and allowed five.
A repeat matchup offers no direct NIRA standings implications, but it gives Lindenwood another opportunity to develop combinations before facing Navy on September 25.

What to Watch in NIRA Week 3
Princeton and Lindenwood have produced the season’s largest Division I scoring statements, but neither faces another established championship contender this weekend.
The more revealing games may come elsewhere.
Sacred Heart can show that its narrow loss to Harvard was not an isolated performance. Army must demonstrate that it can respond after two defeats. Navy needs momentum before facing Lindenwood. AIC finally gets its first competitive evidence of the season, while Davenport and Frostburg State provide the first direct comparison between two early Division II leaders.
Week 3 may not decide the postseason field, but it should give the first meaningful shape to the races developing behind the established national contenders.
