What Is a Super Regional in USA Club Rugby?
A Super Regional is one of the regional playoff competitions in the USA Club Rugby XVs National Championship pathway. Qualifying clubs compete through four Super Regional pathways — Pacific, Gulf Coast, Northern and Atlantic — with winners in the national-championship divisions advancing to the USA Club Rugby XVs National Championships.
Super Regionals bring together qualifying clubs from regional rugby organizations across a much larger part of the country. They form the major postseason step between regional competition and the national championship stage.
The exact qualification route and tournament format can differ by region and division, so not every club reaches or moves through a Super Regional in exactly the same way.
A Super Regional is a regional playoff competition in the USA Club Rugby XVs postseason. The four current Super Regions are Pacific, Gulf Coast, Northern and Atlantic. In divisions that advance to Nationals, Super Regional winners move on to the USA Club Rugby XVs National Championships.
Where Do Super Regionals Fit?
Important: This is a simplified pathway. Qualification formats can differ by division and region, and not every Super Regional uses exactly the same bracket or number of matches.
What Is a USA Club Rugby Super Regional?
USA Club Rugby organizes its XVs postseason around four large geographic regions known as Super Regions. The playoff competitions within those regions are known as Super Regionals.
They bring together clubs that have progressed through their respective regional competition pathways and give those teams an opportunity to advance toward the national championship stage.
Super Regionals therefore sit above regular league and regional competition in the postseason structure and, for the divisions competing for national titles, below the USA Club Rugby XVs National Championships.
A Super Regional is not a normal league that clubs play in throughout the season. It is a postseason competition involving clubs that have qualified through the applicable regional pathways.
What Are the Four USA Club Rugby Super Regions?
USA Club Rugby currently organizes its XVs postseason around four Super Regional pathways:
Pacific Super Regional
The Pacific pathway includes qualifying clubs from four regional rugby organizations in the western United States.
- Pacific Northwest Rugby Football Union
- Northern California Rugby Football Union
- Southern California Rugby Football Union
- Southwest Rugby Union
Gulf Coast Super Regional
The Gulf Coast pathway includes qualifying clubs from Texas and regional organizations across the South and Southeast.
- Texas Rugby Union
- Florida Rugby Union
- True South Rugby Football Union
- Georgia Rugby Union
- Carolinas Geographic Rugby Union
Northern Super Regional
The Northern pathway includes qualifying clubs from Mid-America and Rocky Mountain, together with clubs advancing through the Midwest Rugby Union structure.
- Mid-America Rugby Union
- Rocky Mountain Rugby Union
- Midwest Rugby Union
Atlantic Super Regional
The Atlantic pathway includes qualifying clubs from four regional rugby organizations in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
- New England Rugby Football Union
- Capital Rugby Union
- Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union
- Empire Geographic Union
USA Club Rugby currently identifies Mid-America and Rocky Mountain as Geographic Unions within the Northern structure, while the Midwest Rugby Union is listed as a Territorial Union. The Midwest structure also contains Local Area Unions.
How Does a Club Qualify for a Super Regional?
Clubs do not simply enter a Super Regional on their own. They reach the postseason through the qualification structure applicable to their division and region.
Qualification depends on the division and regional structure. Union championships and regional competition determine many of the qualifying clubs, but the number of available places and the exact route into a Super Regional can vary by region and division.
This means winning a regular-season table or even a particular regional competition should not automatically be assumed to produce the same postseason outcome everywhere in the country. The applicable competition rules determine the pathway.
Clubs compete in their league or approved regional schedule.
The applicable union or regional structure determines which clubs qualify.
Qualified clubs compete within one of the four larger postseason regions.
Winners in national-championship divisions advance.
Do not assume every club reaches a Super Regional in exactly the same way. The applicable competition and postseason rules determine the qualification pathway for each division and region.
How Does a Super Regional Work?
Super Regionals are staged as concentrated postseason events, bringing qualifying clubs from multiple regional organizations together at a host location.
There is no single bracket used by every region and division. Depending on the competition, a Super Regional can include semifinals and finals, a single championship match or another approved postseason arrangement.
That means two divisions at the same Super Regional — or the same division in two different Super Regions — do not necessarily follow identical brackets.
Qualifying clubs can meet in semifinals to determine the teams advancing to the regional final.
Some divisions can use a direct championship matchup rather than a four-team semifinal bracket.
Winners in national-championship divisions advance into the national championship field.
The 2026 Pacific Super Regional was the only three-day Super Regional and the only one with semifinals in both Men's Division I and Women's Division I. Other 2026 regions used different match structures, illustrating why there is no universal Super Regional bracket.
Which Divisions Play at Super Regionals?
The exact divisional lineup can vary by Super Regional. For the 2026 XVs postseason, USA Club Rugby announced Super Regional competition covering Women's Divisions I through III and Men's Divisions I through IV, although not every Super Regional featured every division.
Women's Divisions
- Division I
- Division II
- Division III where contested
Men's Divisions
- Division I
- Division II
- Division III
- Division IV where contested
In 2026, Women's Division I and II and Men's Division I, II and III competed for advancement to the USA Club Rugby XVs National Championships. Women's Division III and Men's Division IV did not advance to Nationals, although champions could be crowned at Super Regionals where those divisions were contested.
What Happens After the Super Regionals?
For divisions competing for a national championship, Super Regional winners advance into the USA Club Rugby XVs National Championships.
The four Super Regional pathways provide the national championship field with representatives from across the country.
In 2026, the National Championships featured 20 teams across five divisions: Women's Division I and II and Men's Division I, II and III. Each division had four teams in the national championship field.
