The final weekend of August delivered international drama, enormous USA club rugby scorelines and the opening round of the Americas Rugby Championship.
South Africa responded to its opening defeat against New Zealand with a 33–26 victory in Cape Town, Australia held off Argentina 27–21 in Jujuy, and Argentina XV and Chile XV opened the Americas Rugby Championship with victories.
Across Rugby Fan Central’s Monday-to-Sunday review window of August 24–30, 52 completed matches were recorded.
And some of the biggest numbers came from the American club game.
Union County and Bayonne combined for 124 points, South Buffalo scored 118 without reply, and several Midwest contests were decided by a single score.
It was a week that stretched from Test rugby in Cape Town and Argentina to club pitches across the United States.
August 24–30 — By the Numbers
From Test rugby to USA Club Rugby, RFC recorded a week filled with huge scorelines, tight finishes and standout individual performances.
Springboks Strike Back Against New Zealand
South Africa answered its opening-Test defeat with a 33–26 victory over New Zealand at DHL Stadium in Cape Town, leveling Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry at one win apiece.
The Springboks led 24–14 at halftime after tries from Jesse Kriel, Damian de Allende and returning captain Siya Kolisi.
New Zealand scored four tries through Cam Roigard, Damian McKenzie, Leroy Carter and Ardie Savea, but Cheslin Kolbe’s kicking proved decisive.
Kolbe converted all three South African tries and added four penalty goals for 18 points from the tee. He was also named player of the match.
The performance made Kolbe the leading points scorer in RFC’s available player-statistics data for the review window.
New Zealand had won the opening Test 33–16 at Ellis Park, but South Africa’s response left the four-Test series tied 1–1 heading into the third Test at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on September 5.
All Blacks Survive a Midweek Test Against the Lions
New Zealand’s week had actually begun four days earlier in Johannesburg.
The 10BET Lions pushed the All Blacks before New Zealand escaped with a 41–35 victory at 10BET Ellis Park.
The Lions led 35–17 before New Zealand mounted a remarkable second-half comeback.
Rieko Ioane, Ethan Blackadder and Emoni Narawa each scored twice for the All Blacks, with Narawa’s second try at full time finally securing the victory.
The match completed the franchise portion of New Zealand’s South African tour. The All Blacks had previously beaten the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls before facing the Lions.
It meant New Zealand arrived in Cape Town having won its first five matches on tour — four against South African franchises followed by the 33–16 opening-Test victory over the Springboks.
South Africa finally ended that winning run on Saturday.
Australia Extends Its Winning Run in Argentina
Australia extended its winning run to four Tests with a 27–21 victory over Argentina at Estadio 23 de Agosto in Jujuy.
The Wallabies made a rapid start.
Brandon Paenga-Amosa and Carter Gordon crossed before Argentina responded through Gerónimo Priscinatelli.
Fraser McReight then scored Australia’s third try, before Joaquín Moro crossed for Argentina late in the first half.
Ryan Lonergan’s penalty after the clock had gone red gave Australia a 22–14 halftime lead.
Argentina struck first after the break when Boris Wegner crossed, with Santiago Carreras’ conversion cutting Australia’s lead to a single point at 22–21.
Australia responded through Tom Hooper in the 55th minute, restoring a six-point advantage.
Argentina continued to attack late, but Australia’s defense survived the pressure to secure the 27–21 victory.
Fraser McReight was named player of the match, while the result continued Les Kiss’s unbeaten start as Wallabies head coach.
The teams now move to Mendoza for their second meeting on September 5.
USA Club Rugby Produces a Huge Weekend
While the international matches carried the biggest names, some of the week’s most remarkable numbers came from USA Club Rugby.
Across RFC’s complete Monday-to-Sunday review, the single highest-scoring match was in New Jersey.
The Union County Mudturtles defeated the Bayonne Bombers 103–21, producing 124 combined points.
That was the highest combined match total recorded by RFC during the review window.
But even 103 points was not the highest individual team total of the weekend.
South Buffalo Reaches 118
South Buffalo produced the biggest individual team score recorded by RFC, defeating the North Buffalo Ninjas 118–0 in Midwest Women’s Division 2 Northern.
The 118-point margin was also the largest recorded in RFC data during the report window.
South Buffalo wasn’t alone in producing an enormous women’s score.
The Cincinnati Wolfhounds defeated Dayton 74–5, while Fort Wayne beat the Cincinnati Kelts 63–19.
The Metropolis Valkyries defeated Oconomowoc 78–5, and Wisconsin won 78–21 against Minneapolis Menagerie.
Palmer College also reached 78 points in a 78–10 victory over the Chicago Sirens.
The women’s divisions therefore supplied several of the biggest attacking performances anywhere in RFC’s database during the week.
Not Everything Was a Blowout
The huge totals only told part of the USA club story.
Some of the weekend’s best contests went down to the final few points.
The Columbus Castaways edged the Marysville Rhinos 31–29 in Midwest Men’s Division 4 Central — a two-point result identified by RFC’s Weekly Editorial Report as one of the clearest close-finish stories of the week.
There was another two-point finish in Midwest Men’s Division 3 Ohio, where the Cincinnati Kelts defeated Louisville 26–24.
The Chicago Griffins also edged the Cincinnati Wolfhounds 45–43, while Cleveland Rovers defeated Pittsburgh Forge 31–28 and Erie held off the South Pittsburgh Hooligans 29–24.
Peoria Pigs and Northwest Woodsmen combined for 95 points in another tight contest, with Peoria winning 50–45.
The contrast was striking: the same weekend that produced 100-point team totals also produced several games decided by one possession.
Argentina XV Opens the Americas Rugby Championship With 10 Tries
The Americas Rugby Championship began in Talcahuano, Chile, with a dominant performance from Argentina XV.
Argentina XV defeated Paraguay 58–13, scoring 10 tries in difficult conditions after heavy rain in Talcahuano in the days leading into the opening round.
Captain Ignacio Dogliani scored the opening try after two minutes.
Martín Vaca, Franco Rossetto and Nicolás Viola each scored twice, with Juan Ignacio Greising Revol, Luciano Avaca and Pedro Coll also crossing for Argentina XV.
The official result is important because RFC’s current Weekly Editorial Report records the score as 58–11.
Sudamérica Rugby’s official competition report confirms the final score as 58–13, so that is the result RFC should use editorially and correct in the Data Hub.
Chile XV Beats Uruguay XV 33–12
Host side Chile XV also opened the competition with a victory, defeating Uruguay XV 33–12 in the second game of the Talcahuano doubleheader.
The match also produced three red cards: Uruguay’s Myszka and Lucas Bianchi and Chile’s Clemente Saavedra were sent off.
The result left Argentina XV and Chile XV as the opening-round winners heading into the second round of matches.
Players Who Stood Out
Kolbe provided the clearest scoring performance of the week.
His 18 points against New Zealand came from three conversions and four penalties, and RFC’s statistical database places him at the top of its available points data for the review period.
But RFC’s data identified several other notable performances.
Emoni Narawa recorded two tries against the Lions and appeared among RFC’s leaders across multiple attacking categories.
Cobus Reinach led multiple available categories including try assists, kicks from hand and kicks retained.
Timoci Tavatavanawai appeared prominently for defenders beaten and line-break assists, while Ardie Savea appeared among RFC’s leaders across several statistical categories.
RFC’s available attacking data also recorded Rieko Ioane with 141 carry metres, Tavatavanawai with 137 and Richie Mo’unga with 118, while Rob Valetini led the available data with 17 carries.
Those numbers demonstrate how RFC’s growing match database can add another layer to the weekly review beyond simply recording final scores.
Five Things We Learned
From the Springboks’ response in Cape Town to another enormous weekend of American club rugby, these were the biggest takeaways from August 24–30.
South Africa Answered the First-Test Defeat
The Springboks responded to their 33–16 loss at Ellis Park with a 33–26 victory in Cape Town. Siya Kolisi returned, Cheslin Kolbe punished New Zealand from the tee and South Africa leveled the four-Test series at 1–1.
Australia Is Building Momentum
Australia’s 27–21 victory in Jujuy extended the Wallabies’ winning streak to four Tests. Les Kiss remains unbeaten since taking charge, and the Mendoza rematch now gives Australia an opportunity to turn that momentum into a series victory.
USA Club Rugby Cannot Be an Afterthought
South Buffalo scored 118 points, Union County scored 103, and several other teams reached the 70s and beyond. The scale and variety of the weekend’s results reinforced why the American club game deserves a major place in RFC’s weekly coverage.
Huge Scores Didn’t Prevent Close Finishes
Columbus beat Marysville 31–29, Cincinnati Kelts edged Louisville 26–24 and several other matches were settled by one possession. The weekend delivered both extremes: extraordinary attacking totals and matches decided by only a handful of points.
The Americas Rugby Championship Has an Early Test
Argentina XV and Chile XV were convincing opening-round winners. Now Argentina XV faces Uruguay XV while Chile XV takes on Paraguay, giving the competition its first chance to show whether those opening margins reflect the wider balance of the tournament.
Now the Series Starts Again.
