The countdown has reached 365 days.
One year from today, on October 1, 2027, Australia and Men’s Rugby World Cup debutant Hong Kong China will take the field in Perth for the opening match of Rugby World Cup 2027.
What follows will be the biggest Men’s Rugby World Cup yet: 24 nations, 52 matches, seven host cities and, for the first time, a round of 16.
For American rugby, the countdown carries added significance. The USA Eagles are back after missing France 2023 and have been drawn in Pool E with France, Japan and Samoa.
And when Australia 2027 is over, the next Men’s Rugby World Cup will be played in the United States in 2031.
With exactly one year to go, here is where Rugby World Cup 2027 stands.
The Biggest Men’s Rugby World Cup Yet
Australia 2027 will introduce one of the biggest changes to the Men’s Rugby World Cup format in years.
The field expands from 20 to 24 teams, with six pools of four replacing the previous four pools of five.
That means each nation will play three pool matches rather than four.
The top two teams from each pool will advance, along with the four best third-place teams, creating a 16-team knockout field and the first round of 16 in Men’s Rugby World Cup history.
The expansion increases the tournament from the 48 matches played at France 2023 to 52 in Australia.
But the tournament will actually be shorter.
France 2023 ran from September 8 through October 28 — 51 days from opening match to final. Australia 2027 will run from October 1 through November 13 — 44 days.
Despite adding four teams and a new knockout round, the tournament will crown its champion a week sooner.
The matches will be concentrated into 19 matchdays, and World Rugby says every team will receive at least five rest days between matches.

Australia Opens Against Hong Kong China
Australia will begin the tournament against World Cup debutant Hong Kong China at Perth Stadium, commercially known as Optus Stadium, on Friday, October 1.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. in Perth — 6:45 a.m. ET / 3:45 a.m. PT Friday in the United States.
The Wallabies’ Pool A also includes New Zealand and Chile.
From there, the tournament will spread across Australia before the Webb Ellis Cup is decided at Stadium Australia in Sydney on November 13.
The USA Eagles Are Back
The USA returns to the Men’s Rugby World Cup in Pool E alongside France, Japan and Samoa.
For American supporters, the Eagles’ campaign begins one day after the tournament opener.
The USA faces France at Docklands Stadium — commercially known as Marvel Stadium — in Melbourne on Saturday, October 2.
Seven days later, the Eagles head west to Perth for their second match against Samoa.
Their pool campaign concludes against Japan at Adelaide Oval on October 15.

Melbourne remains on Australian Eastern Standard Time for the France game before clocks change on October 3, while Adelaide is observing daylight time by the Japan match. Western Australia does not observe daylight saving.
That is why the U.S.-Australia time difference changes during the Eagles’ pool campaign.
The tournament marks the Eagles’ return after the USA failed to qualify for France 2023. The United States had appeared at every Men’s Rugby World Cup from 1999 through 2019 before missing the tournament in France.
The Eagles will be back on the world stage, four years before it comes to the United States.
How to Watch Rugby World Cup 2027 in the United States
The Australian time difference means Rugby World Cup 2027 will involve plenty of late nights and early mornings for American supporters.
All three USA pool matches illustrate the challenge. France begins in the early hours of Saturday morning across the United States. Samoa starts at 12:15 a.m. ET Saturday and 9:15 p.m. PT Friday. Japan begins at 5:30 a.m. ET Friday and 2:30 a.m. PT Friday.
USA Rugby has confirmed that all Rugby World Cup 2027 matches will be available live to U.S. viewers on Paramount+.
RFC will provide U.S. kickoff times, daily schedules and viewing information throughout the buildup to the tournament.
Third Place Could Still Mean the Knockout Rounds
The new format changes what qualification from the pool stage looks like.
Finishing outside the top two will no longer automatically mean elimination.
The first- and second-place teams in each of the six pools qualify for the round of 16, joined by the four best third-place teams.
Those third-place teams will initially be separated by cumulative match points, with the tournament’s tiebreaking criteria applied if required.
That means bonus points and points difference could become significant as teams fight for the final knockout places.
The inaugural Men’s Rugby World Cup round of 16 will be played on October 23 and 24, with matches in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
More Than Half the Tickets Are Already Secured
One year out, demand is already substantial.
World Rugby announced at the one-year milestone that 1.3 million tickets have been secured by supporters from 164 countries, representing more than half of the available inventory.
World Rugby also says 51 percent of ticket purchasers are between 16 and 44 years old, while approximately 250,000 international supporters are expected to travel to Australia.
Pool-match tickets start at AUD$40 for adults and AUD$20 for children, while more than one million tickets were originally made available for under AUD$100.
Those figures come from World Rugby’s official ticketing information and its September 30 one-year-to-go update.
A World Cup Built Around Weekends
Australia 2027 will have a noticeably different rhythm from previous tournaments, with the schedule deliberately concentrated around weekends.
The busiest day arrives at the end of the pool stage.
World Rugby is calling Sunday, October 17 a “historic Super Sunday,” with five Rugby World Cup matches scheduled on the same day for the first time in tournament history.
Italy faces Georgia, Ireland plays Uruguay, Scotland meets Portugal, France takes on Samoa and South Africa faces Romania.
The five games will help determine the final qualifiers for the new round of 16.
The following weekend brings the round of 16, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and, on the tournament’s seventh Saturday, the final in Sydney on November 13.
Following the Eagles Across Australia
For supporters actually going to Australia, the challenge is very different.
Fans attending all three Eagles pool matches will begin in Melbourne, travel west to Perth and then return east to Adelaide between October 2 and October 15.
Tickets are therefore only one part of following the USA. Domestic flights and accommodation will also be significant pieces of the trip.
Rugby Fan Central will be there.
RFC has already secured tickets and hotel accommodations for Rugby World Cup 2027, and we plan to bring readers coverage from Australia as the tournament unfolds.
Over the next year, we’ll also follow the practical side of getting there — schedules, tickets, travel, viewing information and what American supporters need to know if they are making the trip themselves.
Australia Will Test Rugby’s New World Cup
The expanded format makes Australia 2027 more than another edition of the tournament.
It will be the first test of the 24-team structure.
Four additional nations will participate, yet the tournament increases by only four matches compared with France 2023.
Reducing each pool from five teams to four removes a round of pool matches, while the new round of 16 adds another knockout stage.
The result is more participating countries and more knockout rugby without a major increase in the overall number of matches.
Australia will provide the first evidence of how that structure works in practice — including what happens when four of the six third-place teams advance to the knockout rounds.
Those lessons will have particular relevance in the United States.

The Last Men’s World Cup Before USA 2031
Australia will be the final Men’s Rugby World Cup before the tournament comes to the United States for the first time in 2031.
That gives 2027 additional significance for American rugby.
For the Eagles, it is a return to the world stage after missing France 2023.
For American supporters, it will be the first look at the expanded 24-team World Cup that will eventually arrive on home soil.
And for rugby in the United States, the final whistle in Australia will begin the four-year countdown to hosting the tournament.
The United States will then host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2033.
365 Days to Go
Australia last hosted the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2003.
Twenty-four years later, it will return transformed.

The USA Eagles are back.
RFC will be there.
And exactly one year from today, the waiting ends.
