The USA U20 Women delivered one of their most complete performances of the summer, defeating South Africa 47-12 in a physical contest that showcased the Eagles’ attacking depth, defensive resilience and composure under pressure.
Seven tries powered the Americans to victory, including two each from Alyssa Hine and Madelyn Hubbell. Scrum-half Annie Henrich added six conversions in an excellent performance from the kicking tee.
Although the final margin suggests a comfortable victory, the match featured several changes in momentum, an overturned USA try, two South African yellow cards, a 20-minute red card and uncontested scrums during the closing stages.

USA Establishes Early Control
The Eagles settled quickly and immediately placed South Africa under pressure through their forward pack.
Alyssa Hine opened the scoring after sustained pressure near the South African goal line. The USA continued to build momentum, with Madelyn Hubbell extending the advantage as the Americans began to control possession and territory.
South Africa showed glimpses of attacking quality but struggled to retain possession against an aggressive American defensive line.
The Eagles continued to capitalize on their opportunities. Seq’hiya “Pip” Simmons crossed for another try before Arielle Fotso added a well-worked score to place the USA firmly in control.
Behind the forward pack, the American backline grew increasingly confident. Bella Vogel, playing at fly-half, helped control field position, while Henrich directed play from scrum-half and consistently converted the Eagles’ scoring opportunities.
South Africa Responds After Halftime
South Africa emerged from the break with renewed energy and produced its strongest period of the match.
The Junior Springbok Women applied sustained pressure inside the American half before Siphumelele Mdlalose crossed for South Africa’s opening try.
The USA appeared to respond almost immediately through Hubbell, but the score was reviewed by the Television Match Official. The try was overturned after Hubbell was ruled to have stepped into touch before grounding the ball.
Instead of immediately restoring their advantage, the Eagles were forced into an extended defensive effort as South Africa continued to attack.
The American defense remained composed, absorbing repeated phases and preventing South Africa from turning its momentum into further immediate points.
Discipline Changes the Match
South Africa’s discipline became one of the defining stories of the second half.
The Junior Springbok Women received two yellow cards, while Cecilia Ross was shown a 20-minute red card.
The cards left South Africa playing with reduced numbers for significant periods and made it increasingly difficult for the hosts to maintain their attacking pressure.
The match later moved to uncontested scrums, removing an important competitive area and changing the structure of the closing stages.
The USA was already in a strong position, but the numerical advantage allowed the Eagles to control possession, stretch the South African defense and create additional space.
Eagles Regain Control
After surviving South Africa’s strongest spell, the Eagles gradually re-established control.
Hine powered over for her second try of the match, rewarding another patient attacking sequence close to the South African line.
Hubbell also completed her two-try performance as the Eagles continued to turn pressure into points.
South Africa refused to fade away. Jolene Haas crossed for the hosts’ second try and added the conversion herself.
However, any hope of a late South African comeback was ended when Kiana Edwards scored the USA’s seventh and final try, completing an impressive team victory.

The Eagles combined a powerful forward effort with disciplined defense and clinical finishing to score seven tries against a talented South African side.
Just as impressive was the way the Americans responded after halftime.
South Africa opened the second half with greater intensity, scored through Mdlalose and then prevented the USA from immediately responding when Hubbell’s apparent try was overturned.
The Eagles could easily have allowed that sequence to change the direction of the match. Instead, they remained composed, defended through South Africa’s best attacking period and gradually regained control.
South Africa’s discipline undoubtedly influenced the closing stages, particularly after the yellow cards, Ross’ 20-minute red card and the introduction of uncontested scrums.
However, the USA had already shown it could match South Africa physically and tactically.
The most encouraging aspect of the performance was not simply the 47 points or the seven tries. It was the Eagles’ ability to remain calm when the match became difficult.
They defended for long stretches, recovered from the overturned try and continued attacking with confidence when opportunities returned.
That combination of resilience, physicality and attacking ambition is an encouraging sign for the future of this young American squad.
