Uruguay has named a 28-player Uruguay XV squad for the 2026 Americas Rugby Championship, combining established senior players with emerging talent for its three-match campaign in Chile.
Argentina XV, Chile XV, Paraguay and Uruguay XV will compete across three match days from August 29 through September 6. Uruguay opens against host Chile XV, meets Argentina XV four days later and concludes its campaign against Paraguay.
New Uruguay head coach Guzmán Barreiro selected the squad after previously coaching Los Teritos at the 2026 World Rugby Junior World Championship. The tournament gives Barreiro and his staff an opportunity to evaluate players before Uruguay resumes its World Rugby Nations Cup campaign in November.
Felipe Aliaga will captain Uruguay XV after also leading Los Teros during the July Nations Cup window. The squad includes experienced forwards Manuel Diana, Ignacio Dotti, Ignacio Péculo and Reinaldo Piussi, while Juan Manuel Alonso, Santiago Álvarez, Felipe Arcos Pérez and Ignacio Facciolo add senior experience among the backs.
According to Sudamérica Rugby, 22 of the 28 selected players have represented Uruguay’s professional franchise in recent seasons. Together, they have accumulated 460 appearances across the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby and Super Rugby Americas.
The squad also includes players from Uruguay’s recent Junior World Championship campaign. Juan Francisco Bessio, Guillermo Curuchet, Sebastián Pérez, Pedro Suárez, Bruno Baccino and Justo Ferrario all appeared for Los Teritos in Georgia.
Ferrario is among the most prominent young players selected. He played at fly-half for Peñarol during the 2026 Super Rugby Americas season and made his senior Uruguay Test debut against Portugal in November 2025. World Rugby identified Ferrario as Uruguay’s player to watch before the Junior World Championship.
Barreiro described the Americas Rugby Championship as an opportunity to assess developing U20 players, club players, rugby sevens converts and more experienced members of the national setup. The competition will help the coaching staff make decisions ahead of the November international window, the next Super Rugby Americas season and Rugby World Cup 2027.
Uruguay’s three matches are representative XV fixtures and are not full senior Tests for Uruguay.
