USA Club Rugby delivered one of the biggest Saturdays of the young fall season on September 5, with a 64-point statement from Chicago Blaze, a two-point Men’s D1 finish in Pittsburgh and an immediate surprise in the opening round of Midwest Women’s D1.
RFC highlighted the USA club slate as one of the key parts of its Rugby This Weekend: September 4–6, 2026 preview.
The men’s Western competition reached Round 3, while the Midwest Women’s D1 season opened with four matches across its Eastern and Western conferences.
Chicago Blaze produced the result that immediately jumped off the page, beating previously unbeaten St. Louis Bombers 64–19.
Metropolis earned an important 19–13 victory over Kansas City, while Cincinnati beat Indianapolis 27–14 and Pittsburgh Forge edged Detroit 17–15 in the East.
On the women’s side, Chicago Lions opened with a 10–7 victory over defending Midwest champion Chicago North Shore, Metropolis Valkyries beat Twin Cities Amazons 41–31, Grand Rapids defeated Detroit 38–12 and Pittsburgh Forge beat Columbus 39–19.
Further down the divisions, the numbers became even bigger.
Chicago Lions D2 scored 76 points, Metropolis Valkyries D2 put up 74, Green Bay reached 59 and Eastside Banshees scored 50.
Here is what stood out to Rugby Fan Central.
Chicago Blaze Made the Weekend’s Biggest Statement
Chicago Blaze 64–19 St. Louis Bombers
No result changed the complexion of the Men’s D1 Western race more dramatically.
St. Louis entered September 5 unbeaten after winning its opening two matches. The Bombers defeated Kansas City 22–16 on August 22 before beating Chicago Lions 22–12 a week later.
Then they ran into Chicago Blaze.
Blaze didn’t simply end the Bombers’ unbeaten start. Chicago scored 64 points and won by 45, turning a matchup against the early Western leader into the most eye-catching Men’s D1 result of the weekend.
The performance also continued an impressive start for Blaze. Through its first two league matches, Chicago is 2–0, has scored 109 points and owns a +63 point differential.
That is enough to make Blaze one of the early teams to watch in the Western race, regardless of what the standings table looks like this early in the season.
And this matchup isn’t finished.
Chicago Blaze and St. Louis are scheduled to meet again on October 3.
After what happened on September 5, the rematch is already one worth circling.
Metropolis Gets Its First Win
Metropolis 19–13 Kansas City Blues
Metropolis needed a response.
Its first league match had ended in a 57–5 defeat against Chicago Lions on August 22.
Two weeks later, Metropolis got one.
A 19–13 victory over Kansas City moved Metropolis to 1–1 and gave the club its first league win of the campaign.
For Kansas City, the result continued a frustrating early pattern.
The Blues lost 22–16 to St. Louis in their opener and 19–13 to Metropolis on September 5 — two defeats by exactly six points.
Kansas City is 0–3, but those two close results suggest the record alone does not tell the entire story.
The Western table is already taking shape, but September is far too early to assume it will stay that way.
Pittsburgh Wins a Two-Point D1 Battle
Pittsburgh Forge 17–15 Detroit Tradesmen
Pittsburgh had already shown that it could put points on the board.
Forge scored 60 against Indianapolis on August 29.
Against Detroit, it needed a completely different kind of performance.
Seventeen points were enough.
The 17–15 victory gave Pittsburgh another important result in an Eastern race that remains extremely tight.
RFC’s current standings have Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and the Chicago Griffins all on six competition points.

Cincinnati Adds Another Eastern Result
Cincinnati Wolfhounds 27–14 Indianapolis Impalas
Cincinnati joined Pittsburgh on the September 5 winners’ list with a 13-point victory over Indianapolis.
The Wolfhounds are among the early group on six competition points in the East.
Indianapolis, meanwhile, has had a difficult opening stretch, conceding 60 against Pittsburgh before facing Cincinnati a week later.
There is plenty of rugby still to come, but the early Eastern table already looks capable of producing a close race for postseason position.
Chicago Lions Knock Off the Defending Midwest Champion

This result deserves more attention than the score alone suggests.
Chicago North Shore won the Midwest Women’s D1 championship last season.
North Shore went 5–1 during the 2025 regular season, defeated Columbus 39–0 in the Midwest semifinal and then beat Pittsburgh Forge 29–22 in the championship match.
That made the September 5 opener a significant early test for Chicago Lions.
The Lions won it 10–7.
It was the lowest-scoring Women’s D1 game of the weekend and the closest, with only three points separating the teams.
One result in Round 1 does not determine a championship race.
But beating the defending Midwest champion is a notable way for Chicago Lions to begin its 2026 campaign.
Metropolis Valkyries Open With 41

The other Women’s D1 Western opener went in the opposite direction.
Metropolis and Twin Cities combined for 72 points, with the Valkyries coming away with a 10-point victory.
Metropolis entered this season after another strong 2025 campaign. The Valkyries finished 5–1 in the Western competition last fall before Pittsburgh Forge edged them 22–20 in the Midwest semifinal.
Their 2026 opener immediately puts five competition points on the board.
It was also part of a huge day for the Metropolis women’s program.
The Valkyries’ D2 side defeated Minneapolis Menagerie 74–26.
Across the two recorded matches, Metropolis’ women’s sides scored 115 points on September 5.
Grand Rapids Opens With a 26-Point Win
Grand Rapids Growlers 38–12 Detroit
Grand Rapids produced the largest winning margin of the Women’s D1 opening round.
The Growlers beat Detroit 38–12, giving them a +26 point differential and five competition points from their first match.
Pittsburgh Forge also collected five in the East after beating Columbus.
With only one round played, there is no reason to draw sweeping conclusions from the standings.
But Grand Rapids could hardly have asked for a more convincing start.
Pittsburgh Women Start With 39

Pittsburgh completed a strong Saturday for the Forge organization.
The women’s side scored 39 in a 20-point victory over Columbus, while the men’s D1 team edged Detroit 17–15.
That means Pittsburgh’s Men’s and Women’s D1 teams both finished September 5 with victories.
There is also some recent history between the women’s programs.
Pittsburgh finished 7–1 during the 2025 Midwest Women’s D1 regular season and reached the Midwest championship match before losing 29–22 to Chicago North Shore.
A 39-point opening performance gives Forge a strong start to another campaign.
Division 2 Produced the Weekend’s Biggest Numbers

From a 76-point shutout to a 100-point women’s matchup, Division 2 produced some of the biggest scores on RFC’s September 5 slate.
Chicago Lions recorded the largest winning margin among the USA Club Rugby results tracked by RFC from the weekend.
The D2 slate provided everything from shutouts to 100-point combined totals. Chicago Lions’ 76–0 result produced the weekend’s largest winning margin, while Metropolis Valkyries and Minneapolis Menagerie combined for exactly 100 points.
Lincoln Park’s 47–31 victory also helped keep the club at the top of RFC’s current Men’s D2 Central standings with 10 competition points.

What We Learned
1. Chicago Blaze Has Become an Early Western Story
This is bigger than one 64-point performance.
Blaze is 2–0 with 109 points scored and a +63 point differential.
St. Louis has already accumulated 10 competition points, Chicago Lions has shown its own scoring ability and Metropolis is now in the win column.
But through its first two matches, Blaze has done enough to make itself one of the teams RFC needs to watch closely in the West.
2. The Chicago Lions Women’s Win Carries Real Weight
Calling Chicago North Shore a newcomer would completely miss the significance of this result.
North Shore entered the season as the defending Midwest Women’s D1 champion.
Chicago Lions beat them 10–7.
It is only Round 1, but that result immediately gives the Western competition an interesting early storyline.
3. Metropolis Had a Very Good Saturday
The men’s D1 side responded to its opening defeat by beating Kansas City.
The Women’s D1 Valkyries scored 41 against Twin Cities.
The Women’s D2 side scored 74 against Minneapolis.
Across those three recorded matches, Metropolis teams went 3–0 and scored 134 points.
That is one of the strongest all-club performances from the September 5 slate.
4. Pittsburgh Is Building Momentum Across Two D1 Competitions
Pittsburgh’s men followed a 60-point performance against Indianapolis with a two-point win against Detroit.
The women opened their campaign by putting 39 on Columbus.
Both Forge D1 teams now have early results worth following.
5. The Scoreboard Doesn’t Tell Every Story
Chicago Blaze won by 45.
Chicago Lions D2 won by 76.
Pittsburgh’s men won by two.
Chicago Lions’ women won by three.
The same weekend produced blowouts, defensive contests and games decided by a single score.
That variety is one reason the developing conference races deserve more than a weekly list of final scores.
What Comes Next?
The men’s Western race moves into Round 4 on September 12.
Metropolis hosts Chicago Blaze, giving Blaze an immediate opportunity to build on its 64–19 win.
Kansas City hosts Chicago Lions in another Western matchup.
On the women’s side, Chicago Lions faces Metropolis Valkyries after both teams opened with victories.
Those games should begin telling us whether the opening results are establishing genuine trends or simply giving us the first surprises of a long fall season.
And one date is already worth circling: October 3.
Chicago Blaze and St. Louis are scheduled to meet again.
After 64–19 on September 5, the return match suddenly carries considerably more intrigue.
