More than simply releasing the tournament fixtures, the announcement marks another milestone in the rollout of the new WXV Global Series, which is reshaping the women’s international calendar through to the 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cup. The tournament will be staged at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, with Brazil, Fiji, Hong Kong China, the Netherlands, Samoa and Spain each playing three matches over three weekends.
Unlike the top-tier WXV Global Series, which features 12 nations competing in a home-and-away cross-regional touring model, the Challenger brings all six teams together at a single venue for a compact international tournament.

WXV Global Series Challenger 2026 Match Schedule
Round One – Sunday, 13 September
The inaugural WXV Global Series Challenger will be played across three match weekends at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground in Hong Kong, with each of the six participating nations playing three matches.

Hong Kong Hosts a New Era
Hong Kong China becomes the first nation to host the new Challenger format, with Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground staging all nine matches across three weekends.
Centralising the competition reduces travel demands for participating teams while creating a festival atmosphere for supporters, allowing fans to watch every nation in action throughout the tournament.
The event also marks an important milestone for Hong Kong China’s women’s national team, who will play on home soil for the first time since 2024.
Tickets for the tournament will go on sale from 4 August through the official Hong Kong China Rugby ticketing platform.
Building Consistency for Emerging Nations
The WXV Global Series Challenger is one of the most significant additions to the women’s international calendar.
Rather than relying on occasional tours and isolated Test matches, the competition guarantees each participating nation three meaningful internationals within a dedicated global window. That consistency allows unions to build combinations, develop squad depth and benchmark progress against similarly ranked opponents.
The Challenger also sits alongside the top-level WXV Global Series, ensuring that 18 of the world’s leading women’s national teams have structured international competition each year.
During the current 2026-2028 WXV cycle, there is no promotion or relegation between the Challenger and the top-level Global Series. Instead, World Rugby has prioritised calendar stability while the new competition model becomes established ahead of the next Women’s Rugby World Cup qualification cycle.

World Rugby Chief of Women’s Rugby Sally Horrox said the inaugural Challenger represents another important step in expanding meaningful international opportunities for emerging nations.

The wider WXV Global Series will run across an eight-week international window from September through October, with the world’s top 12 teams competing in a cross-regional touring model while six developing nations contest the centrally hosted Challenger.

The release of the fixture list is another reminder that the Challenger is designed to solve one of women’s rugby’s biggest long-term challenges: inconsistent international competition.
For many emerging unions, meaningful Test matches have historically been limited, making it difficult to build continuity, measure progress and retain momentum between Rugby World Cup cycles.
